Painting with Paper

Students will explore how to make pigmented paper pulp to create a full palette of colors, and how to use those wet fibers as a kind of paint. Students will learn the process for making both smooth and textured paper pulp, as well as techniques for mark-making, creating shapes of color, building layered images and how to retain negative space within a composition.

MARCH 8 - free drop in activity - Oregon City

We’ll be popping up at the Oregon City Spring Forward Community Resource Fair.

We’ll have our mobile studio set up outside where you can drop by and make paper from recycled and local plant materials. Take a few sheets of paper home and dip your toes into the world of hand papermaking.

MARCH 23 - Recycled Paper - Oregon City

We’ll offer a free Recycled Papermaking workshop at the Oregon City Public Library. Space is limited sign up here.

Would you like to learn how to turn your unwanted junk mail, used gift wrap, old magazines and other used paper materials into unique handmade paper? This is the class for you! We will use a variety of papers to make colorful, eco-friendly, and one-of-a-kind papers that are great for making cards, drawings, prints, etc. You'll learn how to use stencils, cookie cutters, and dried plant materials to create designs on and in your paper. This is a fun and messy class where you can let your creativity flow. No experience required, feel free to bring in flat ribbons, dried flowers and plant materials you want to embed into your paper.

APRIL 12 - Earth Day with Metro - Portland, OR

Join us with our program hosts Metro at Glendoveer Golf Course for a day of stewardship and craft. The Metro team will lead participants in land tending blackberry plant removal, and we will teach you how to make paper from the blackberry plants.

JUNE 22 and SEPTEMBER 21- Paper from Regional Plants - Oregon City

TWO DATE OPTIONS AVAILABLE - REGISTER VIA WILDCRAFT AT THE LINK.

This one day workshop is offered in partnership with WildCraft Studio School. Register here. From 10am-4pm we’ll discover what plants are best for different types of papermaking. This workshop will introduce students to the wild and cultivated plants that can be used to make strong, beautiful paper of varied hues and textures. On a walk around the Pulp + Deckle studio property, students will harvest plants before returning to the studio to cut and cook the plants down into raw fibers, ready for the next stage of pulping! The class will then dive into processing fibers with kitchen blenders and by hand with mallets, making pulp. We’ll finish out the day making the pulp into sheets of paper, learning pressing and drying techniques that you can duplicate on your own after the workshop. You’ll leave the class with a sampler of damp papers that can be used for a variety of purposes including postcards, drawing, painting, collage, bookmaking, or as-is as a piece of art on its own.

We’ll have an info table at this free event at Clackamas Community College. Join us to learn about local wildlife and explore nature! Activities include local guest speakers, crafts, raffle prizes, and light refreshments.

All ages and experience levels welcome!

AUGUST 3 - Paper Lace Artwork 1:30-3:30pm at Oregon Contemporary, 8371 N. Interstate Ave
Portland, OR 97217

In this Paper Lace Artwork workshop you'll use yarn, thread, and recycled textiles to create a unique matrix that you will embed in varied paper pulps. The process will lead to the creation of finished artworks that resemble open weave or lace-like art, as well as sculptural forms created with biodegradable cups. Paper pulps will be premade, and a variety of colors of yarn, thread, and pulp will be provided. No experience is required, just bring a willingness to slowly create in community with your fellow workshop attendees. At the end of the workshop you will have 2 wet paper pulp pieces to bring home and dry.
